A WakeUp Call from Foreign Workers in a Flat World

by Darwin on March 17, 2009

There isn’t much to say about this video other than – Wow, Reality Sinking In.  If you think the current economic downturn, the layoffs, the headlines are bad now, imagine what western economies may look like in 20 years when virtually any role can be outsourced to someone a world away who wants what you have and is willing to work much harder that we’re used to in order to get it.

I realize some of the imbedded statements are assumptions, estimates or just pure speculation, but the overwhelming message cannot be denied. After reading The World Is Flat, it started to sink in that I needed to diversify my career, my skill set, I completed an MBA, and I left what was clearly a promising role in a rather custom type of biotech manufacturing to get into a more strategic business role – even at the expense of trading a promotion in manufacturing for a lateral move into a new area.  That role has in turn evolved into another position with even broader reach and diversity of experiences.  Now, if I needed to find employment, I could look in any of 3 different types of organizations from biotech to strategic sourcing to supply chain to project management.  There are no guarantees in life and I’m not naive enough to believe I will always be able to find work easily, but I’ve at least attempted to stack the deck in my favor.

After Watching This Video,

What Statement to you Find to be Most Shocking?  Most Concerning to You?

What are you doing to prevent this inevitable competition within our lifetime?
